Empirical Formula Lab

Purpose: to find the percent composition of MgO

Procedure:
1. Measure mass of crucible, then mass of magnesium in the crucible
2. Heat over Bunsen burner until white
3. When cooled, measure mass of crucible with MgO inside
4. Calculate percent composition of MgO

Data:
Crucible mass: 19.64 g
Mg mass: .499 g
MgO mass: .0648
Mg moles: .00207917
O moles: 9.3 x 10^-4

Percent Oxygen: 23%
Percent Magnesium: 77%

% Composition of Hydrates Lab

Unheated mass:
A- Copper II Sulfate: 2.10g
B- Calcium Chloride: 2.17g
C- Sodium Sulfate: 2.24g

Test tube mass: 5.21g

While heating...
Copper II Sulfate: Changed from light blue powder to dark blue from the water, then to grey powder as it dried.
Calcium Chloride: no change
Sodium Sulfate: sizzled, then dried up

Results:
Copper II Sulfate: 1.57g
Calcium Chloride: 1.83g
Sodium Sulfate: 1.49g
